Pile moment capacity

#### Calculation of pile moment

Type of pile

| Type of pile       | Comments               |
| ------------------ | ---------------------- |
| Bored cast in-situ | Stiffness is different |

#### Depth of fixity (for Seismic case)

$$L\_1 =$$ Height above ground level of lateral Forces

$$T = ( E \* I/h\_h)^{1/5}$$&#x20;

#### Maximum moment in pile

Fixed end moment in pile is given by, $$M\_F = Q \* (L\_1 + L\_F) / 2$$&#x20;

(For fixed head piles, refer to IS 2911 (part 1/Sec 2-2010) Cl. C.4.3 of Appendix C)

Actual maximum moment in pile is given by, $$M = m \* M\_F$$&#x20;

From IS: 2911 (Part 1/ Sec 2-2010), from fig. 5b of Append. C, corresponding to $$L\_1 / T$$ .

Maximum moment in pile, $$m = 12.29 \* Q$$&#x20;

# Social formulation

What is social formulation?

The identification of a thing, thought, or process by a number of people. This identity acts as a base. This is the collective idea of people about domains life in a social setting. This is essential for the social fabric to sustain in the so called dwellings like villages, cities or countries.

### Examples

For example, the "Job" is a widely accepted formula for earning for a living at a recurrent fixed income over the years. The concept of job is well known, and widely accepted across time - in medieval ages to the modern age, geographically, even in space!

Few other examples are education, and money.

#### Few vocabulary examples

Portuguese word "Saudade" - expresses a subtle emotion that we feel when we walk down the lane.

For engineering "Incremental approach" - tells the small step increase over time for accomplishing simple, hard or impossible tasks.

### Advantages

This formulation saves human time and makes it easy to communicate complex ideas in an analogous fashion. For the formulation to happen the attributes have to be felt by a substantial number of people. Some formulations take years to decades to manifest.

Every now and then there is new kind of formulation happening as our understanding develops where people pioneer in a new way of doing things.

A well formed social formula paves the way for easy spreading the knowledge around it and pass it down easily the learnings. For example, the business strategies, fallacies, and biases.

### Disadvantages

Social formulae are difficult to change without a jolt. A lot of effort is expected or a sudden realization happened with masses. Only during the extraordinary circumstances that have consequences at a massive level does the formulation changes considerably.

The formulations persistent across generations even when the essential conditions that lead to the formulation in the first place cease to exist. This presents a challenge to people blindly adhering to the status quo. This can sometime even lead to misunderstandings and even conflict.

# Control digital footprint

Delete and curtail the personal data across internet

### 1 Delete unused accounts

one way to figure all the websites for which you have an account, is to list all the saved passwords (generally 100 to 300 credentials!). If you are unsure which ones to delete, then pick the accounts that you have not used in the last **6 - 12 months**.

For chrome, go to&#x20;

> chrome://settings/passwords

![sites for which user account exists](/files/-MTl0ohE36UAsL2QjaPA)

Deleting the user accounts would take a week or so. 🦥

Deleting can be by **`Account settings`** or by sending an **`email`** to the support.

### 2 Delist content from search

For google search, use <https://search.google.com/search-console/remove-outdated-content>

![The url to remove from the google search](/files/-MTl1Ctemg_t5UXqE_9H)

### 3 Cookies

Many sites default to all cookies, but you have an option of opting out of all cookies or keep only strictly necessary cookies.

For example, When you are prompted to accept cookies

![Cookies acceptance prompt](/files/-MTl1vT_qy59kG3oQ1qB)

Pick **`Manage Settings`**, instead of ~~**`Accept All Cookies`**~~ ,&#x20;

![Note that only Strictly Necessary Cookies are active](/files/-MTl2GR9YO7ZrTbkVO3a)

Now select **`Save Settings`**.

### 4 Keep content private

A social media post, an article, a blog, a comment, WhatsApp status can be posted only to the intended audience (minimize as much as possible).

{% hint style="info" %}
Public user accounts will be beneficial when you are trying to gain followers for commercial purposes. Keep Instagram account private, regularly check for the people you may not know.
{% endhint %}

If you really want to share some personal photos to friend, personally meet them and show them on your phone - no need to share.

### 5 Know who have your data

Keep a record of the data you shared with the companies. The following table provides a starting point

#### Data risk table

| Company 🏢     | Full name | Date of Birth | Bio Metrics | Full Address | Phone number | Risk   |
| -------------- | --------- | ------------- | ----------- | ------------ | ------------ | ------ |
| Google         | yes       | yes           | yes         | yes          | yes          | High ⚡ |
| YCombinator    | yes       | yes           | no          | no           | no           | Low    |
| Mobile carrier | yes       | yes           | yes         | yes          | yes          | High ⚡ |

Once you have this table, see how you can minimize the risk by removing the data from the platforms.

## FAQ

1. **If I shared something online, will it stay permanently?**\
   No. If you act immediately and take steps to remove the data from the concerned websites and monitor for the internet search for a reasonable period, we can delete the data.<br>
2. **Do I have the right to take control of my digital footprint?**\
   Yes, you have all the rights to take control of your footprint. You can request data from the data holder and ask them to delete the data unnecessary.<br>
3. **Is it OK to keep all the information about me in public?**\
   Of course, No. Keep only the strictly necessary information online. Share any info on a case-by-case and temporarily.<br>
4. **Can I share personal family information on a closed group such as WhatsApp?**\
   No, you should not share any personal or family info on closed or open groups. We should go by [zero trust](https://www.cloudflare.com/learning/security/glossary/what-is-zero-trust/) principle. Share in person on your device (keep secure 🔒 hold of your data!).<br>
5. **My boy\[girl]friend asked for personal pictures of mine, can I share them?**\
   Strictly, No. Most of the info shared in this manner end up on the internet. If you want to, meet him/her personally and show the pictures on your device itself, do not transfer any data from your mobile that you do not want the public to see.\
   \
   Never trust a boy\[girl]friend with you personal info, because he/she has **no legal or moral obligation** not to share it.<br>
6. **I have deleted data on my computer or mobile phone, is it permanent?**\
   Data *stays on a device* even after the permanent deletion, so it is wise not to hold any data (images, data files, videos) that is critical incase if it is out.

1. Technical System\
   Hardware of the company\
   \- Relationship manager partner, ensures connection between CEO top priorities and core-on-the-ground team\
   \- small dedicated teams supported by wide expert network\
   \- a research arm, ensures most cutting edge solutions / innovative traditional "game-books" are available
2. Management Infrastructure\
   Includes performance as well as talent management.\
   Performance - Metrics for the team such as for the analytical problem solving skills, whether the consultant is able to step back from a problem mindset to think it through the CEO mindset\
   Talent management - every interviewee is subjected to the problem faced by a top level executive of the company, with no guidance on information availability.
3. Mindsets and behaviors\
   Ownership of the problem - the core consultant team "own" the problem\
   Continuous learning - McKinsey tracks whether its previous recommendations lead to actual sustainable improvement to the client.

# Secrets, which ones to share

To whom, we can share what?

Keeping secrets is not easy but they will create an air of *mystery and interest* around us.

### Legend

# How to be Straightforward

Learning to be straight forward without being unwelcome

### Boring discussion

In childhood, we have kept authentic thoughts before authoritative figure which were met with rejection, denial, eye-rolls, and shouting. Hence, we tend to keep the same even when the our situations change.

As an adult even in the worst case scenario, we could just walk away.

### How to be

1. If they are attracted to someone they find some charming, kind and inoffensive ways of making their feelings clear.
2. We can untangle ourselves by noticing and growing curious about the origins of our habitual evasiveness and reluctant slyness.
3. How little of our truth is originally acceptable to those originally brought us into the world. Simultaneously, tell ourselves that our circumstances have changed.
4. No one is going to hurt at us. Speak inexplicably hurt, like they once did.

### What is it with the complicated people

1. They are painfully unaware of the legitimacy of their own feelings. Which renders them unable to let the world know what they truly want and feel.
2. They will give every impression of being happy with you, while crying inside.
3. They feel overlooked, but won't ever push themselves forward or raise a complaint.
4. They are longing to be understood but never speak.
5. When they are attracted to someone, only outward evidence might be few sarcastic comments. Leaving the object of their affection bemused or unimpressed.

### What could explain such confusing complexity?

Because the child met with criticism when put forward his authentic thoughts, he develops emotional code. He became someone who imply rather than state.

* Who has given up saying anything that its audience already might not want to hear.
* Somebody who lacks the courage to articulate their own convictions or even take slightly risk bit for affection the another person.

### Assumptions that are unhelpful

* Our complicated behavior doesn't in fact please people.
* Most of the people we deal with far rather be disappointed head on, than to sold a fine tale and then have to suffer disappointment in gradual doses.

{% hint style="warning" %}
Human interaction is inherently filled with the risk of conflict.

* We are never far from misaligned goals or divergent desires.
* However, the straightforward people among us have known enough love and acceptance early on. They were able to bear the ruffling of few feathers.
* They invest their energies in trying to deliver their intentions with thoughtful diplomacy rather than burying them badly beneath temporary and saccharine smiles.
  {% endhint %}

# Productive procrastination

How I stayed productive at work with procrastination

The task at hand that we want to avoid, gives us the reason to search for some alternative task. For example,

### In office

* Clean my desk (1 hour)
* Keep paperwork in organized (10 mins)
* Fill papers in the printer (5 mins)
* Take a coffee (5 mins)
* Catch up with a colleague what they are working on (10-30 mins)
* Help my colleagues with books, calculations, tips etc. (5 mins)
* Document my work. Write down the procedure for doing something (1-3 hours)
* Take a walk outside (30 mins)
* Learn some advanced skill related to work (Excel, AutoCAD, Word etc.) (1-4 hours)
* Upgrade old worksheets and clean any unused sheets or names (1-4 hours)
* Meet people from other departments to know what they are on (20 mins)
* Browse HBR for emotional intelligence and workplace productivity (Lunch break)
* See any interesting examples of work (during low moods)
* Request colleagues for consistency in the design calculations and presentation (when no work or deadline is no where near)
* Take a print of a paper from a complex article or book and post it on my desk wall (When feeling lucky!)

### In Home

* Start working instead of washing clothes
* Start working instead of cooking food
* Cleaning room instead of working on an interesting idea or completing drawings
* Watch movies instead of sticking to the computer
* Walking instead of working for I was watching movies online
* Fantasizing instead of working on concrete thoughts on requited love charm

# Everyday things

These are everyday things that needs a deeper and resolution day by day.

The following are somethings I have identified that consistently bothers people.

# Emotional weather

Weather is a set of conditions and the state of elements (air, water, soil, temperature, and materials).

| Rainy                                                                          | Sunny                                                                                    |

| <p></p><ul><li>rain drops</li><li>black clouds</li><li>wet/humid air</li></ul> | <p></p><ul><li>white/no clouds</li><li>sun presence</li><li>Higher temperature</li></ul> |

![Moon gravity, clouds and our brain](/files/-MUb06hmrs6z5Mf4M0Hy)

The same applies to our emotions

Emotions are a set of conditions or a state, that have an impact on thought process, physical feeling, energy levels, sense of self, confidence (our position in the environment).

### Cycle

The emotional weather cycle can be in hours and may not be regular/irregular based on our activities.

While, the atmospheric weather will have a cycle of few months, with a daily localized changes.

### What are our elements

Water (75% of the body composition), air, food, external (health, human influence, environmental influence). The elements, in a state of flux, defines weather.

Since the above elements vary so does our emotional weather.

### Consequences

* [x] change of choices, or consistency in choices
* [x] Unable to make a quick decision, with good consideration
* [x] Comfort (it have a contrast effect, with a baseline)
* [x] Confidence
* [x] Working efficiency fluctuates

# Money rules

What and what not to do with money

1. We do not need to disclose our money or assets to anyone. No need to show off. If you have money, secrecy should be the main concern. Also, learn what to keep as a secret - [Secrets, which ones to share](/season-1/secrets)<br>
2. Do you know how much money you have in your bank account? - If not, open the account details and commit them to memory. Learn interest rates **by heart**.\
   \
   Always keep money securely, money does not know how to take care of itself -- we need to do that. Use more than one bank. Choose a bank and make sure you can bargain with them if an issue arises, if not sort it or change the bank<br>
3. Do not take credit cards - unless it is strategic to save interest. Very few people have the discipline to manage a credit card. No matter how many times banks ask you to take it, politely refuse - Say like "I am grateful to know that you offer a nice scheme for credit card, Kindly opt me out any communication regarding this. Thank you."<br>
4. Do not give money to friends. Some of our friends might be in financial struggle, make sure to help them but with **a strict constraint** and also if the amount owed more than **10 days of your salary** make a legal agreement with a lawyer (but you know, friends don't charge interest. 😉) else it you it is you who will get into trouble later!.\
   \
   If a friend asks money for their business - you will be thinking as an angel investor. Get an MOU with the conditions outlined, even if you have given only a week's salary - don't be shy, or afraid. This gives an assurance that the friend is serious about the business.<br>
5. Keep 1/10 of your income in your personal account and never touch it. This amount is not for your parents, your wife, or your kids but for you. This money never lend anyone for any purpose, this one is for your freedom, personal emergency - you have already gave 9/10th to all those causes, **be ruthless**.<br>
6. Skill up. Learn about investing, invest a small amount and see how it functions. Learn tax saving methods (investing in long term, claim charity tax rebate etc.). Learn about law.\
   \
   Invest time into learning the prices of everyday goods. Find ways (don't think much!) to reduce cost by just 5%. If you are a loyal customer to a company ask for discount, why? - because acquiring new customers costs money to them - the cost you are paying if you pay same price as other customers.<br>
7. Do not spend more than you earn. There is no magic!. You do not need a money tree, be determined and focused you will do fine with money.

# Qualities of an Artist

Based on my encounters with people and works, I have identified qualities that make an artist.

#### Perseverance

Perseverance is the intensive work attitude towards accomplishing the task. A little theory or an equation is enough to solve a problem, but practising this over a problem corpus and time-constrained testing would produce quality work.<br>

#### Incremental approach

With the incremental and iterative approach, they accomplish the task. Each incremental step itself is functional and objective.<br>

#### Resilience

The amount of time, strength, and the number of attempts, regain from fall, all losing without morale.

#### Practical

Artists are extremely practical. They know what material - people or things are made of because they have spent long enough time studying and observing. They know their strength, how much work they can do, what is impossible.

#### Understanding of the self

Before anything, they know themselves - their habits, mood cycle, impatience, thoughts, desires, etc. They are not afraid to be alone with thoughts.

#### Long term Training

These people undergo phenomenal training in years either through schooling or hard lessons taught by hunger and bureaucracy.

#### Consistency

They make it perfect the first time, the tenth time and every time. Knowing the ingredients and how they interact, artists have a template of actions. One way to achieve consistency is by writing down the materials, working with them, and timing for various steps in as vivid detail as possible.

#### Ability to stay silent

One thing an artist learns after an understanding of the art is to know the subtlety of work. They naturally will become humble.

#### Confidence

Artist is well versed in understanding their position in surroundings.

#### Gentleness

The artist become mindful of the precision of the tools, makes gentle maneuver&#x73;*.*&#x20;

# Shameful Inconsistency

While working on a task, going well with expected outcomes, creates a sense of confidence that we could do anything. After the lunch, you attempt the task and it didn't work - we feel like total disaster.

### Reasons

1. Mood swing causes the evaluation to be corrupted. Our reasoning ability is not constant. It changes with time of the day, work pressure, motivation.
2. Our brains inability to do computation and holding information at the same time.\
   \
   For example, you could answer 2 x 2 = ? but\
   \- 22 x 22 = ? (take significantly longer), we know how to compute but we need to hold the intermediate results.
3. Keeping a flux benchmark, which is not clear to make decisions upon.

# Mean Sea Level

How mean sea level (MSL) is calculated

Mean Sea Level (MSL) is the average sea level, measured over 19 years.

Sun and Moon gravity influences the level of water above Earth's surface. The water attracts the Sun side of the earth due to Sun's gravity while the other side due to lack gravity water level rises.

To account for the fluctuations, the measurements averaged over Nineteen years.

# Edu loan EMI calculation

How to calculate Education loan EMI and understanding interest rates?

Use [spreadsheet ↗](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1-v7W6HK6-v1m910x_wTLH9a808IMzIjf2S6UcdXtPHo/edit?usp=sharing) to quickly calculate.

### Hand calculation

$$
EMI = \frac{\[P \* R  \* (1+R)^n]} { \[(1+R)^ n-1]}
$$

| Symbol | Description                    | Comment                                                                        |
| ------ | ------------------------------ | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| P | Principal loan amount | Amount you have received from the bank |
| R      | Rate of interest               | <ul><li>9.0% per annum, generally.</li><li>9.0/12 = 0.75% per month.</li></ul> |
| n      | Number of monthly installments | For 2 years, 2 \* 12 = 24                                                      |

{% tabs %}
{% tab title="in Indian Rupees" %}
P = 3,00,000 INR

R = 9.0% per annum = 0.75% per month = 0.75/100 points = 0.0075

n = 24 (say, 2 years)

EMI = $$\frac{\[300000 \* 0.0075 \* (1 + 0.0075)^{24}]}{\[(1+0.0075)^{24} - 1]}$$ = 13,705 INR (approx.)
{% endtab %}

{% tab title="in US Dollars" %}
P = 3,00,000 USD

R = 9.0% per annum = 0.75% per month = 0.75/100 points = 0.0075

n = 24 (say, 2 years)

EMI = $$\frac{\[300000 \* 0.0075 \* (1 + 0.0075)^{24}]}{\[(1+0.0075)^{24} - 1]}$$ = 13,705 USD (approx.)

# Advanced Gmail tips

Some advanced Gmail tips to simplify work and emotional life

Managing email flow became part of workers (students, managers, even freshers) daily job. But, the email is not free - it is a hard task to read and respond to an email. see <https://hbr.org/2013/04/email-is-not-free#>.

In the above article, Tom Cochran identified that it cost **95 cents (of labor costs) per email**. So, if you have worked on 100 emails per week, then it is $95.

{% hint style="info" %}
Tip: Shallow email reading affects our attention residue and decrease task efficiency.
{% endhint %}

## Email how-to

### 1 Sending email 📤

Always schedule send an email at least one hour. Of course, it depends on what work you do. I am a bridge designer, so one hour works for me.

![](/files/-MV-AqhvcRajGgC4vrhJ)

![](/files/-MV-Am5AA4fwUz5UI15n)

#### Table - Email schedule template

| Scenario                       | Hours            |
| ------------------------------ | ---------------- |
| For sure emails and urgent | 1 hrs. |
| For sure emails and not urgent | 12 hrs. |
| Not sure emails and not urgent | 24 hrs. |
| Not sure emails and urgent | Is it necessary? |

### 2 Creating a filter&#x20;

Let us say you want all your bank statements to go into the archive, then **`filter`** will do.

#### Method 1: Do it from the search bar

![](/files/-MV-Ay0GRqOCIo4qWFXO)

![](/files/-MV-B2TS9yDJp7N1vbj7)

#### Method 2: Do it right on the email

![](/files/-MV-BCVs6nG_p2aT417J)

### 3 Labels 🔖

<div align="left"><img src="/files/-MV-Baojl2aurMD0kgPS" alt=""></div>

#### Table - example labels for emails

| Name               | Description                                                |
| ------------------ | ---------------------------------------------------------- |
| **`work`**         | Job related                                                |
| **`friends`**      | Discussion with friends                                    |
| **`transactions`** | <p>bill receipts</p><p>bank transactions, trading etc.</p> |

### 4 Snooze ⏰

To get predictive responses use scheduling with snooze. It will activate the email after certain time. Email anxiety is real!

![](/files/-MV-DrDznpFHREJWUQh-)

Snooze the email by the following time. If you feel anxious by various emails snoozing will help.

#### Table - snooze schedule

| Type           | Time            |
| -------------- | --------------- |
| Personal       | 12 hrs.         |
| Project email  | 12 hrs.         |
| Support emails | 2 business days |

## House keeping 🧹

#### Cycle time

Every three months, decide the mails that are essential and archive them. Discard the remaining. Four times a year.

# 24 hours before an exam

What to do during 24 hours before the exam

Keep all the material (textbook, prints, image scans) required for the exam ready in one place.

* [x] Syllabus for the exam
* [x] Essential topics
* [x] Notes, printouts, pdfs, links
* [x] Code

### Prepare

If you have spent your time **procrastinating** then start now. It's okay, you kept thinking that you will do it later since you had time. Start with the an interesting topic to gain momentum. Now, write down the list of topics you would be able to grasp that are useful for the exam. Do active practice, write them on whiteboard (if you have one) or a simple paper and read out loud. Do not keep score too high. Increase goal with preparation.

If you have studied well **with planning** over last 4 weeks or so, then note down the key points and topics. Make sure you are conversant with them first. After that increase your span to the topics that need active attention. Write them down as bullet points with reading out loud.

{% hint style="info" %}
If you are feeling your attention is about to get scattered, take a deep breath and hold for a moment.
{% endhint %}

### Test knowledge

* Do a small test, for example for a two hour exam - take a 20 min test to assess the exam readiness. This is in the before the deep revision. So, that you could identify the strength points and weaker areas. In this example, 5 out of 9 questions are correct - so let's work mistakes.

![Small test assessment, to identify strong points](/files/-MV0D3NCepaKcfffNVBd)

* Revisit assessments or test papers you have done previously with their answers. (It helps a lot!)

### Eat and Walk

Eat a simple meal wholeheartedly. Drink plenty of water. Of course, shower please. Shower won't decrease your chances of success. My Math teacher used to say "if you want to by heart, take a shower in the morning and start reading - you will do great". This works for theory exams!.

After every two hours, take a walk outside or inside, for 5 - 15 minutes.

### Plan logistics

Make sure you have the relevant items ready.

* [x] Admit card
* [x] Pen / papers
* [x] \+ Stationary
* [x] Exam hall location
* [x] Exact timing
* [x] Mode of transport and backup plan

`git push --set-upstream origin new-local-branch`

#### How do I revert a git repository to previous commit?

`git reset commit-SHA --hard`

#### How can I add empty directory to a git repository?

We cannot add empty directory. But, we need to keep a file `.gitkeep` or `.gitignore` or just `.keep` file with empty contents. For example, `touch .keep` would create a `.keep` file.

.<https://git-scm.com/docs/git-add#Documentation/git-add.txt-ltpathspecgt82308203>

specifying `git add <dir>` would add `dir/file1` and `dir/file2`.

#### Unstage files?

```bash
# find location of the command
```bash
whereis java
```
### Uses
1. To know that the intended version of the library is in path.
# JNI short tutorial
Create a Java class to use code in C
#### 1 Write a Java class that uses C codes
{% code title="CraftJNI.java" %}
```java
public class CraftJNI {
  static {
    System.loadLibrary("hello"); // Load native library hello.dll (windows)
                                 // or libhello.so (Unixes) at runtime.
                                 // This library contains a native method sayHello()

  }

  // Declare an instance native method sayHello() which receives no parameter
  // returns void
  private native void sayHello();

  // Test Driver
  public static void main(String[] args) {
    new CraftJNI().sayHello(); // Create an instance and invoke native method
  }
}
```
{% endcode %}
#### 2 Compile Java program `CraftJNI.java`
```bash
javac -h . CraftJNI.java
```
{% code title="CraftJNI.h" %}
```bash
/* DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE - it is machine generated */
#include <jni.h>
/* Header for class CraftJNI */

#ifndef _Included_CraftJNI
#define _Included_CraftJNI
#ifdef __cplusplus
extern "C" {
#endif
/*
 * Class:     CraftJNI
 * Method:    sayHello
 * Signature: ()V
 */
JNIEXPORT void JNICALL Java_CraftJNI_sayHello
  (JNIEnv *, jobject);

#ifdef __cplusplus
}
#endif
#endif
```
{% endcode %}
To know more about the generated class file
```bash
javap -verbose CraftJNI.class
```
#### 3 Implement C program
{% code title="CraftJNI.c" %}
```c
#include <jni.h>   // Standard JDK provided header
#include <stdio.h> // Standard C IO header
#include <CraftJNI.h> // Generated header

JNIEXPORT void JNICALL Java_CraftJNI_sayHello(JNIEnv *env, jobject thisObj) {
  printf("I am in C code \n");
  return;
}

```
{% endcode %}
#### 4 Compile C program
```bash
gcc -fPIC -I"." -I"$JAVA_HOME/include" -I"$JAVA_HOME/include/linux" \
   -shared -o libhello.so CraftJNI.c
```
```bash
> java -Djava.library.path=. CraftJNI
I am in C code
```
### Troubleshooting
#### Error 1: class file has wrong version
```bash

Error: cannot access CraftJNI
  bad class file: ./CraftJNI.class
    class file has wrong version 55.0, should be 52.0
```
Reason: `javah` is not available with Java 11
```bash

OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 11.0.9.1+1-post-Debian-1deb10u2, mixed mode, sharing)

> javac -version
javac 11.0.9.1

> javah -version
javah version "1.8.0_252"

> whereis java
java: /usr/bin/java /usr/share/java /usr/share/man/man1/java.1.gz

> ls /usr/share/man/man1 | grep java*
java.1.gz

# Civil distance

Sufficient distance in time and space necessary in a relation

A distance in feelings, physical with another person or thing to develop a right kind of mechanism for its function.

### Functions

* Decrease friction between entities
* Gives space for medium (ether) to intervene in order to develop the right kind of field.
* Businesses to flourish
* Create a long term relationship with neighbors, colleagues and entities.
* Acts as a buffer, to accommodate any urgencies, or inevitabilities
* Take account of the vulnerabilities of people or things involved, acknowledge warmly and accept the difficulties charitably.

### Why?

* Because demanding much control over circumstances can be challenging
* This can be attributed to the characteristic of the human mind. (But, also of entities)
* There is a lot (a good number, difficult to control) of uncertainty around the functions of the entities and their reliability.

### For caution

* It is better to know the depth before diving in

### Related terms

* Polite distance
* Caution
* airtime (sufficient airtime for reaching a decision)
* take time
* take a deep breath

# Being a friend to children

How to ask a child as a parent to play with you and share their concerns

#### 0 Start Early

Start bonding early. Take time to be there for the needs of the child from changing diapers, health care, so that things won't get awkward when they grow up since the bonding has formed.

> The relative lack of early contact with your child has a circular effect. The older your child becomes without a bond having been established, the more awkward you and your child will feel when you are together. And the more awkward you feel together, the less you will want to engage each other again.

#### 1 Try again

You approached your child and asked "Shall we play together." Your child say "No thanks, Dad. I don't want to play now." You feel rejected. (If he doesn't want to play with me, it's fine why bother!) You feel self-righteous about asking again. You feel "I tried once, it won't work for me."

{% hint style="success" %}
Simply respond with "Okay, let's make a specific date for another time. What do you think might be fun?"
{% endhint %}

#### 2 You have a very difficult child

> Difficult children are difficult to be with. Instead of pleasure, they often provide stress and frustration. Instead of offering joy, they cause you to wish you had a different child. You believe that he can't do anything right. It is natural to want to withdraw from interactions which are painful and unrewarding.

Ironically, it is more difficult child who needs you the most. He hears your constant criticisms. He sees your looks of exasperation. And he feels terrible that you think those things about him, for he is desperate for your love. He is desperate for you to tell him he is not the bad person who he suspects everyone believes him to be.

> How do you not lose patience with a difficult child?

Your child is so bossy because inside she feels so powerless. Your child is a brat because inside he feels frightened and out of control. The patience, self-control, and generosity you can ham from raising a difficult child will also help you better deal with the problematic, troublesome people you will inevitably encounter in daily life.

# How to talk to a teenager

Talking to a sibling, cousin or a child, who are in different stages of life

You start to make decisions that have real life consequences College, friends, driving, and substance use. Coping with emotional challenges is tough at this stage, and there is a chance of risk and impulsive decisions.

A healthy relationship with teen during these years will payoff. Interference in their decisions and wants would come across as hostile.

> While they're an open book to their friends, who they talk to constantly via text messages, they might become mute when asked by mom about how their day went.

Be focused and build awareness that it is a tough time for both you and the teen. It is a phase which will pass.

#### Tips

1. **Listen** - Simply sit back and listen what they have to say.
2. **Validate their feelings** - Let them solve their problems, this way you build confidence. and acknowledge age appropriate disappointments. But saying something like "She wasn't right for you anyway" after a romantic disappointment can feel dismissive. Instead "that sound difficult."
3. **Take them seriously** - Teens want to be taken seriously, especially by their parents or guardians. Let them take the game.
4. **Be thoughtful of their independence** - A thoughtful explanation about why parties on school nights are not a good idea will make it more reasonable.
5. **Be observant** - It's normal for kids to go through some changes as they mature, but pay attention if you notice changes to her mood, behavior, energy level, or appetite. Likewise, take note if he stops wanting to do things like that used to make him happy.

# Resilience and relationship

Building resilience around daily life

Calmness and strength when faced with difficulty is an important characteristic. We face difficulties around workplace, at home, relationships, or bureaucracy.

Resilience is an approach to the difficulty in an objective, focused, and open manner. This skill can be learned with practice and transferable to other aspects of life.

### How to solve challenges

1. See everyday problems as opportunities to build resilience. Develop skills in

   * [x] handling tax increase and hidden costs of a purchase
   * [x] Customer care agent calling regularly to sell a credit card
   * [x] Nagging child
   * [x] Poor service at the restaurant
   * [x] Clumsy acquaintance
   * [x] Standing in queue

2. Try to manage these setback by reacting with humor, optimism, strength and rationality.

3. Think through the problem in a good frame of mind over a period of time. Wait!

4. Describe the problem more vividly, this would help keep the actual problem from emotional flux. So, you could find a simple, actionable solution.

5. Write things down. See the problem the you have solved, keep context. After a year or two you might forget the context, but this solutions might be a starting point for even more complex problem.<br>

### Relationships

Test of time, misunderstandings, separation shall test the strength of relationship.

* Listen to the partner not just when an issue arises. Regularly talk, play, tease, share and keep the link intact. It is better to ask and listen than to assume.
* Learn the boundaries and do not get disappointed. People chose to be with us. If you feel disappointed share with them.
* Take responsibility for your own emotions.

# 9 to 5 vs 4 hour workweek

Why 9 to 5 is relevant and important

It is after the hard effort and craftsmanship that needs to be put in for a good product to happen. The expertise and proper skills required to execute on a plan that would if after sufficient machinery could turn into a startup. If the product-market-fit is achieved then the startup would become sustainable.

The skillset gained from the day-to-day systematic work over a long period time, would add and improve skills in both interpersonal and technical domains.

This four hour workweek might work for few people, but for many it is dangerous. Because it belittles the effort needed for completing a task complex or otherwise.

Building a product from a cheap dev house, or hiring a college graduate to code an app would necessarily could only go to an extent. Entrepreneur's task is not only to go for meeting events or pitches, and outsourcing core product, but to involve in every step of the core product, build skillset with the new problems faced everyday,&#x20;

A sound understanding of the terrain where we are actually operating on whether it is at the periphery or at the important locations that could drive an important function. Any session - a coffee meet or conference does not provide an academic like situation where the return on investment (time and presence) would be there.

There needs to be an agenda, a list of items that we need to cross and the academic deep work (reading, calculation and practice) to do.

Ingredients of an important workpiece - Understanding of the problem domain, clear understanding of the concepts, intensity of effort, long hours of work, resilience, skill set (sometimes gained by years of learning and practice), discipline.

# Return on Investment

Calculation of ROI with example

$$
ROI = \frac{\[Value of Investment - Cost of Investment] \* 100} { \[Cost of Investment]}
$$

Cost of Investment = $100,000

Value of Investment = $145,000

$$
ROI = \frac{\[145,000 - 100,000] \* 100} { \[100,000]} = \frac{\[45,\sout{000}] \* \sout{100}} { \[\sout{100,000}]}
$$

ROI = 45 %

How else to say that we have attached documents with email.

**Please find the attached** is overly used and lost its essence, this creates a sense of flaky feeling to the email body. It would be more thoughtful to alter this sentence unique to the context. People are smart - they do not like to be told!

2. Inform the reader that the email contains attachments.
3. Attaching huge files is not helpful. Upload them to cloud storage and attach a link.
4. Do attach!

# Education: The Good Parts

<div align="left"><img src="/files/agraR5nSCA6eNHBIuXDa" alt=""></div>

Before we could make changes to education system, let us first appreciate it's good parts. How the present education system itself have lead to valuable companies like Google out of a Ph.D. program, Databricks out of a research project and the importance of academic rigor in building sustainable products.

1. Exams as deadlines motivate us to study diligently
2. Percentage of marks as evaluation to help gauge understanding and learning
3. Peer learning, the method of studying year by year. That is 9th grade after the 10th grade. And Master’s degree after a Bachelor’s degree helps avoid the anxiety and mental torture to understand advanced topics without the necessary level of understanding.
4. Structure for the day - A predictable, simple daily structure is required to keep a sense of permanence. There should not be Fireworks.
5. Timing for studying, opportunities for cultivating reading habits, student-friendly learning environments.
6. Tenure - a linear progression in knowledge over time for stable growth and holding.
7. Infrastructure - Study rooms, playgrounds, student clubs, the protection offered to students in society.
8. Education is a 15 to a 20-year project at the Earth scale
9. Face challenges regularly, monthly, quarterly and yearly in exams, tournaments, competitions.
10. Practice collective meditation. A student spends about 3 hours of uninterrupted concentration on the exam, detached from the world.
11. Builds resilience - If the exams are well utilized they would help build resilience (the ability to bounce back).
12. Improves Grit - The rate at which output increases with given focus and effort. Grit acts as a multiplying factor.
13. Education has a framework for incremental improvement
14. It provides sufficient time to explore other interests. You do not need to attend every class, as there is a minimum attendance requirement Which is helpful to focus more on one over the other.
15. Growing up with peers for the social skills development
16. Learn to build community thinking inside the classroom

# Education: The proposed parts

The changes or additions proposed in Education System.

1. Financial literacy with examples, for example students will be given practical examples to save money, how to spend that money. Along with dividing money into parts such as how much to spend for essential expenses, spend on wishes, or a small amount to save for self.
2. Compassionate business language. We have a choice to build an empathetic culture. We can start this right from the childhood. Reframing a more formal question in a diplomatic way.
3. A mindset to do unconventional challenges, take a leave on a single day and build something instead of a class.
4. Digital literacy but to be taught by competent teachers, who have used technology responsibly.
5. A teacher on business management should at least have worked in a grocery store or built a street side business.
6. Time management with short organic tasks that span years. The schools have a unique advantage of keeping a learning exercise to span years!
7. Know what you are eating, they should be tasked with what they are eating in the last month. And asked to make a timetable chart for a new month with a balanced diet.
8. Scenario learning, the students be asked to role play how they would perform in a certain hostile, normal or difficult situation.
9. Tasks to build patience till the work completion.
10. Tasked with learning how companies which sell products to them like gaming, youtube, fast food makes money and how their advertising works.
11. Basic first aid, Heimlich maneuver and not to panic in emergency situations
12. Diplomatic tactics used by different countries

# On feeling stuck

As to why we feel constrained, like tied even when we have choice.

Examples:

1. We might at one level powerfully want to leave a job in civil engineering in order to retrain in computer science - but at the same time, remain blocked by a range of doubts, hesitations, counter-arguments and guilty feelings.
2. Or we might be impelled to leave our marriage - while simultaneously unable to imagine any realistic life outside it.

Friends, colleague or partners suggestions:

1. Why don't you try to enroll on a course to see if you might like a new area of work?
2. Why don't you discuss your dissatisfactions with your partner?
3. Why don't you go to counselling?
4. What about splitting up?

But we're likely to find that our friend can't make any progress, whatever we say.

The specifics will differ but the principle of a hidden law from childhood explains a huge number of adult stuck-ness. The way forward is, first and foremost, hence to realize that there might be a law in operation when we get stuck, that we aren't merely being cowardly or slow in not progressing; and that we feel trapped because we are, in our faulty minds, back in a cage formed in childhood, which we have to be able to see, think about and then patiently dismantle. We can along the way accept that we are now adults, which means that the original family drama no longer has to apply.

# How to read Financial news

Three questions

1. Is the article based on data or opinion?
2. Is it descriptive of past conditions or predictive of the future?
3. Does the article have a testable hypothesis?

Best practices

* Understand the consensus - Grasp the conventional wisdom in order to bet against it. This becomes easier once we do some groundwork over specific investment thesis. After reading relevant news, try to take notes.
* Seek disagreement - You need to understand the other side of the trade, by reading opinions that contrast with yours in order to avoid confirmation bias.
* Question the Narrative - Reporters are under intense deadline pressure and often frame issues in a way that is confusing or distorted.
* Data and source - Charts, tables, and numbers are good places to start for corporate results and economic data.

# What is in my hands

## What can I do

at the moment for the better. You cannot influence other directly by telling them what to do or what not to do. They will just say, "who are you?". For this reason, be sure to know what you are doing.

#### 0 Be healthy

Focus on your health first. Take care of essentials.

#### 1 Work diligently in your own domain

You need to work and build a good record for excellence in your field. Earn some money to keep yourself secure, get immunity from people with power, or unexpected events.

#### 2 Make a well-informed choice

With the information you have, make a good choice, support causes that help for the better.

#### 3 Build and maintain a social circle

People who support you in your endeavors, critics who keep you in check, if possible family.

#### 4 Cognizant of the issues

Be notified of all the relevant documents, hearings without any emotional attachment or prejudice. Build competence in reading the records and analyzing them critically.

# Hygiene

Maintain it all day and every day

## Personal Hygiene

1. Make sure you brush your teeth twice on a daily basis. Dental hygiene is very crucial as you teeth get easily damaged if not cared for properly.
2. Make sure you bath daily, and depending on weather conditions, don't shy away from bathing twice if you have to. Bathing is really important, especially in a city where humidity and pollution breeds bacteria faster.
3. Wear a clinical mask if you are travelling through highly polluted areas. Exposure to pollutants on a regular basis can increase the toxin levels in your body and lead to respiratory issues.
4. Always wear a fresh set of clothes. Wearing the same clothes without washing them can lead to skin disorders.
5. Always keep your genitals extremely clean. It is easy for bacteria and infections to spread from there.
6. Wash your hands in regular intervals. We end up touching a lot of unclean places almost every few minutes.

### Handwashing

I use Dettol to hand wash everyday after eating, once in a half day, after coming from outside, after eating or before using gadgets.

![Courtesy of Dettol](/files/-LpvVk6Yf8_zPrFVLeOk)

### Shower

Skin is the first line of defence from the outside world. Every day it comes in contact with pollutants, germs and bacteria. Keeping the skin clean and healthy is important to make sure this protective barrier function stays intact.

## Surrounding Hygiene

How can we keep our surrounding hygienic:

1. Dispose waste as soon as you can. If waste material is not handled properly, it can lead to the outbreak of deadly diseases like Pneumonia, Jaundice, and Tuberculosis. History has been a proof that most of the epidemics has caused due to improper waste disposal.
2. Always keep your home clean. Keep your toilet and kitchen germ free.
3. Do not dispose waste nearby residential areas.
4. Never spit or urinate in public places.

## Public Transport

### Keep washing your hands

Wear gloves. All you need is to make sure that you wash your hands whenever you get to your destination. Make sure you wash your hands before eating food or making contact with your face.

#### Carry Tissues

This helps in more than on way. It will come handy when you are about to sneeze as well as someone else around you starts sneezing. If a colleague or a stranger around is sneezing, press the tissue to your nose for 30 seconds and keep your eyes shut. Also, antibacterial multi-use wipes can assist in instant clean-up of your face and hands.

### Stay away from your cell phone.

Today, we are constantly in touch with our gadgets; laptops, computers, and tablets. While we spend time on these, we need to make sure that the surface and screens of all our gizmos are clean, especially the ones that come in close contact with the face. Also, try to avoid bringing your phone out if there is too much pollution.

#### Change clothes as soon as you reach home

Majority of the people have the habit of lazing on their sofa for hours in our street clothes. However, this increases the risk of you transmitting the germs to your sofa, couch, or even your bed. So, make sure you change into your favorite home clothes as soon as you reach home. To ensure maximum hygiene, add a capful of hygiene liquid while doing your laundry.

#### Timing is the key

This may sound wishful, but, travelling in public transport when it is less crowded can really add more stars to your hygiene. The simple logic being, the lesser the people, fewer the chances of contagious bacteria around you. Moreover, it is always better to find empty space in otherwise overcrowded bus, metro, or trains. Try leaving your home slightly early if you are a daily commuter.

Another effective way of reducing human contact while commuting is by using smartcard. This way you wouldn't have to stand in long queues and stand close to people who might be carrying bacteria in their body.

### Drink safe water

Always carry adequate water from home before you start commuting. Drinking contaminated water can lead to water borne diseases such as cholera, typhoid, and hepatitis. If the water facilities on your way are not satisfactory, always go for packaged drinking water.

#### Wear gloves

You would look silly in summers, but this is the season when the humidity levels are high which together with pollution makes you irresistible for bacteria. Wearing gloves safeguards you whenever you touch poles, seats and handlebars, which are also touched by everyone else. Simply put, you are avoiding skin contact wherever possible.

# 5 Percent rule

From today make it your mission to look for anywhere or everywhere to cutback on costs just 5 percent.

Examples

| #  | Things                         |
| -- | ------------------------------ |
| 1. | Watching Movies, Videos, songs |
| 2. | Talking on the phone           |
| 3. | Having a shower                |
| 4. | Driving a bicycle              |
| 5. | Drinking a glass of water      |

First, aware of the hidden costs in activities, things. By looking closely enough, you will notice just about everything in life costs you money and when you realize this you will see opportunities to cutback costs by 5%.

The cost of being poor

Assets and disposable income, would help us near to opportunities.

People without assets or disposable income not just miss out on opportunities, they are also susceptible to getting caught on the downward debt spiral that is increasingly difficult to escape from.

For people with no disposable monthly income it only takes something like a diwali or a birthday party to force them to "rob Sanket to pay Ashwin".

The health problems doesn't tend to fix themselves. What might have been a slightly expensive dentist bill will, the longer it's neglected, snowball into very expensive bill at some point in future.

# How not to build a startup

I have not built a startup or, for that matter, some product. I have tried to create one. Here are the few things that I learned about the workings of building products and in consequence a business.

Do not quit your job to build a product from scratch. If you can't build 1/10 of a product with a job, you might not be able to build one without a job.

Do not depend on the funding from investors or Venture Capitalists (VC). Depending on the company you are trying to build, see whether you could bootstrap and can be as lean as possible. At the starting stage, hiring employees will be costly. You should only hire after the product is suitable for the market. And the customers depend on the product and will be paying for the long run may be at least 2 years.

Be technically competent if possible. You do not need to rush into building something out of haste. There is no pressure in building, be good at the job you have. Gain technical competence. If you need a Master's degree to build the required product, then go ahead. Especially, for cutting edge technologies the timing can be as important.

Comparison with peers with similar age-group can be productive if the technology that you are working on is similar.

Growth is an exponential concept, do not rush to scale but take enough time to build a thing that actually works and solves the problem. Build patience and learn to fail, fail faster. This seems easy, you might be tempted by it not working. Take the help of people, friends in building the qualities that are missing. This actually works. We might be missing some qualities, attitudes that are simple to cultivate for some but can be difficult for you to identify, treat them as primary.

If at all possible, never shout. Many things never work out your way. You will be discouraged by so many people who seem to be achieving things at a breakneck pace. Actually, people are subtle when it comes to the expertise they just do it. Do not fret over it, focus on your runway. They are so many planes taking at any minute, that is never a reason for you to be careless. You got to do it right every time.

Are you focused on what you are building all day, is it the primary focus of your present timeframe? - the answer should be yes. Else, you might do a better job at a job where your resume would buildup.

# How to lead a mediocre life

Do not learn anything new. Do not do any physical activity. Do not walk or run. You do not have ambition for the next two years. Do not improve your speaking skills.

Treat your present situation as permanent and accept it. Do not new ideas. Do not take any risks. Marry so that you can feel stable without a good earning.

Have a mental rut over everything in a day. Have petty fights and Binge-watch TV shows or movies. Expect the money to come to you, but do not make any effort. Get attached to the place where you are staying. Be disappointed with the job. Do the same kind of tasks repeatedly. Have unrealistic goals and never make any progress in achieving them. Believe that you can achieve anything. You take others achievements lightly, thinking you can also achieve.

Be chronically tired. Be without energy. You have great thoughts, do not take the first step because you might not be that good.

Do not work on your emotional intelligence and workplace skills. Do not read how to navigate human interactions in family and workplace contexts. Do not try to have a clear idea of what is happening around you. Have a narrative based on whichever news source is comfortable to you. You do not practice healthy scepticism.

You do not eat healthy food regularly. You do not have good personal body hygiene, oral hygiene, and digital hygiene. You do not keep track of your account balances and transactions. You do not know your monthly expense. You do not have money to survive a few months without a job. You do not have a practical way of looking at life. You hate your job. After work, you come home, eat and sleep.

You follow romanticism. You check your email 100 times a day, even though you are sure such an adventure was never successful. You are constantly interrupted. You dread boredom and want to be surrounded by fireworks all the time.

Your attention span is transient. You are impatient and expect things to happen in no time.

You depend on your friends for happiness. You do not have much concern for your self-worth.

# Day-to-day tips from extraordinary people

These are not quotes. These are inferred from their work, speech, and approach. These are what I have learned from them.

"Whenever I get an idea, I write it down." - Larry Page

"I would perhaps be studying my course if the Facebook didn't gain traction." - Mark Zuckerberg

"I have list of do's and don'ts I check this list when I woke up, during eating, while travelling, before night." - Jack Dorsey

"Pair programming actually works. It could lead to building global scale systems" Jeff Dean and Sanjay Ghemawat

"Being rich is a mindset, you can be poor in reality but can be rich on paper as in case of startup founders. To build a business you need to go through a lean process with little money to figure out a sustainable financial model." Instagram founders

# Who owns .com domain

Governing authority for the TLDs

## **Governance**

### **Governed by**

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) - <https://www.icann.org/>

Root zone file contains \~1000 TLDs. This one <https://data.iana.org/TLD/tlds-alpha-by-domain.txt> .

### **Owned by**

United States Department of Commerce

### **Registry Operator**

VeriSign, Inc. (Verisign)

> Verisign's operation of the .COM TLD is governed by two separate agreements: the .COM RA, and the Cooperative Agreement between Verisign and the U.S. Department of Commerce. In 2016, Verisign and ICANN formally agreed that if and when the Department of Commerce and Verisign made changes to the Cooperative Agreement, ICANN and Verisign would negotiate in good faith to ensure those changes were reflected in the .COM RA.

### **Domain Registrar**

Google Domains

As per <https://payments.google.com/payments/apis-secure/get_legal_document?ldi=335152>

> PROVISIONS SPECIFIC TO .COM, .CC, .NAME, .NET AND .TV REGISTRATIONS.\
> \
> Verisign, the Registry Operator for .COM, .CC, .NAME, .NET and .TV, reserves the right to deny, cancel or transfer any registration or transaction, or place any domain name(s) on registry lock, hold, or similar status, as it deems necessary, in its unlimited and sole discretion: (a) to comply with specifications adopted by any industry group generally recognized as authoritative with respect to the Internet (e.g., RFCs); (b) to correct mistakes made by Verisign or any registrar in connection with a domain name registration; or (c) for the non-payment of fees to Verisign. If Registrant is registering a .NAME domain, Registrant certifies that it complies with the .NAME Eligibility Requirements.

## Concerns

### Concerns with Verisign

Verisign has operated in the grey areas of its contract with ICANN. Verisign is leveraging some subtle law suit tactics to gain monopoly over the registry business with ICANN.

One important thing to note is for the last 20+ years Verisign managed to keep the stability. But, this should not be taken for granted. A new competitive bidding process with better negotiating terms are required.

### US Sanctions

The economic and trade sanctions program administered by the Office of the Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the US Department of Treasury.

As per the ICANN blog post,

> U.S. sanctions are set not through an agreement between the international community, but through the unilateral decision of the U.S. to assert sanctions on certain countries, mainly due to mutual conflicts that do not affect the rest of the world. The U.S. has some of the harshest and limiting sanctions against some countries, due to its historical conflicts. If we consider the Internet as a global resource, then actions that hamper access to that resource should not be imposed by one country.

# Do not make bed first thing in morning

Why immediately making bed in the morning is not great

People generally assume we need to make bed immediately after we wake up. But, we should wait while before we do that. Here are the reasons:

1. Bedsheet and blankets get wet with body sweat. They need to left on the bed for a while to dry. Then you can fold all you want
2. Immediately after waking up body will be changed from sleeping to waking mode. So, allow the body to actually wake up before doing a an activity i.e., making bed sheets.

Listen to the body. Do not be too much carried away with the notion that discipline and bed making are related.

# Do not use morning alarm

If you feel generally sad about the morning alarm sound. Then consider not using alarm. If you sleep early enough, you can wake up on time. Try experimenting with this on holidays. And push it in the working days incrementally.

Early morning alarm will spoil your mood. Reserve alarm for the special occasions but for the daily use trust your biological clock. I decided not to use alarm from the last 8 years. I feel fine now.

I am naturally forgetful but that didn't deter me from attending early morning exams, classes or work. I just wake up after 8 hours of sleep.

If I feel that I would like to sleep a bit further I do not feel guilty about it. If the day allow I will make room for 1 to 2 hours of extended sleep.

# Practicing self care

### How to care for ourselves?

Before answering this question, let us see the various parts of life.

<table data-header-hidden><thead><tr><th width="156">Name</th><th>Actions</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>Health</td><td>Regular medical checkups, eating properly.</td></tr><tr><td>Interests</td><td><p>How are our interests?</p><ol><li>these are our personal assets</li><li>make sure to keep them in check, If we are compromising for somebody's sake our we tend to suppress our interests. And assume the other person's interests.</li></ol></td></tr><tr><td>Emotions</td><td><p>The high, medium and lows of the day. They tend to present themselves as permanent, with understanding and practice we will be able to navigate the emotional landscape for the better.</p><p></p><p>If the emotions are intense, do a timed activity for 25 mins. You will feel better.</p></td></tr><tr><td>Goals</td><td><p>Do you have a one year plan. If not, start with a week plan and graduate to a year.</p><p>Simply by planning we tend to keep odds in our favor. Example goal, this week I will eat fruits 5 times.</p></td></tr><tr><td>Sacrifices</td><td><p>Caring is O.K. But, understand that the people are pretty capable themselves. Slowly minimize your commitments to crucial ones.</p><p></p><p>Going out of your way to help colleagues? -</p><p>Stick to the tasks in your job description, and complete them. If you have time, help only when you know they really need help.<br>see <a href="https://hbr.org/2017/01/beat-generosity-burnout">https://hbr.org/2017/01/beat-generosity-burnout</a></p></td></tr><tr><td>Romance</td><td>In movies or in general romance might end up being in the top. It is a part of our life.</td></tr></tbody></table>

We care about others. A simple recall, when we talk to others the same way we talk to ourselves - sometimes it will be labeled harassment. This might be because no one hears what we talk to ourselves.

We have a responsibility to care for ourselves. 💖

# Payment methods

1. The transaction should be mutual until the order of business is complete.
2. The full amount should not be settled until the final product is received to the satisfaction
3. Bargaining power stays with the person with the cash, the moment the cash changes hands it is almost impossible to bargain. Most of the time, unless the other person is concerned about attention to detail you would receive a bit unfavorable service.
4. Speak in fluent language with no scope for ambiguity - keep the agreement in plain terms and make sure both parties participate in the agreement and they are proactive (if possible ask them to repeat).

# Things to learn before MBA

1. Microsoft Excel - Basic data manipulation, working with multiple sheets and keep the sheets documented.
2. Report making basics - Get familiar with report making templates and how to format and version them. Latex, Word are the choices for a few.
3. Prepare CV - Keep one from the start. This acts as a progress report for the choose career path. If possible to try to keep versions of the document.

# Time windows

in remote work to reduce interruptions

While working as a designer, I do some design calculations each day. These calculations need to be checked which would only take some fifteen minutes. The managers' input is required at various steps of the design.

One challenging task for me was to find a suitable time for a conversation with my manager. In between the conversation, there are interruptions like the site calls, people with urgent doubts about their projects etc. Due to this, the initial fifteen minutes will become one hour.

Instead, we could ask for a mutually agreed small-time period regularly.

#### What are Time Windows?

The times during which you can expect an immediate response for emails, code reviews, triage discussions and instant com channels. These are to be agreed upon by the team.

For example,

1. 9:30 to 10:00 AM
2. 1:30 to 2:30 PM
3. 5:30 to 6:00 PM

#### How to implement?

First, start with the timing at which the team meetings or discussions happen. For example, if the team code review happens an hour after lunch then the first time window would be 3:00 to 3:30 PM. Introduce additional time windows incrementally.

The maximum number of time windows are 4 in a day. Depending on the amount of concentration required for a task adjust time windows. The duration of the time window depends on the type of communication. Generally, Code reviews last longer while the email takes less time.

The number of time windows does not need to be the same every day in a week, can be curtailed. It is preferable not to change the timing of the window.

Time windows do not replace scheduled weekly meetings or discussions about unexpected downtimes.

#### Practical steps

In direct messaging apps, the status message can be used to inform your time windows

For example, on Skype available timing and time zone.

# How to quit a job emotionally

{% embed url="<https://youtu.be/Q4u1FzDZOSA>" %}

This process generally start during notice period. Companies have around 30 days of notice for people planning to leave so that they can start the process of separation.

During this time, the emphasis is on completing the existing work and delegating responsibilities to the teammates. The tasks are:

1. Shift the priority to backlogs owned (by you) from taking new work
2. If you talk to external clients, try to refer them on a case-by-case basis to the appropriate team members.
3. Strive complete the tasks a bit over a week earlier. Keep the last week obligations to little over none.
4. You might be friends with some of your colleagues, discuss how are you going to interact in future - if possible, choose a time period like once in month if the they are very close and the mode of communication (instant, email, or phone call). Prefer email.
5. Keep the leaving process less dramatic. More like, if you rejoin after a while it should not feel awkward.
6. Slowly increase time for reflection. Write down the process that you adopted while doing tasks. Keep them as a shared document, and help a teammate how to utilize this document to do work efficiently.

The moment you take a signed document from the company that you are officially relieved, then do not respond to any work related emails from them - instead redirect them without your personal note. Literally, do not care about what happens after you leave because it is illegal to mind the business of an ex-company.

Now, write down the things (technical, managerial, and self) you have learned at this company and move on. Take a little (at least a week) break.

{% hint style="info" %}
If someone asks how was your previous company, tell them the positive points first and stop. If the person asks for more, then the points to be cautious about (or need some thinking).
{% endhint %}

# Journal on a year after quitting

without another job or with a moving objective

Written at different times of the day over six months the thoughts in going through my mind

14th April, 2021 4:00 AM

What am I doing now, wasting my time over .. something. I really have no idea what I am reading, working, searching for, I am still at the same level. Everyday I am losing the salary, I would otherwise have earned. I do not have a home yet. I am becoming 25. What will become of me.

16th April, 2021 2:00 AM

What is happening. What will be there. I have nothing to do. I have no fixed things like home or so.

26th April, 2021 6:00 PM

I have no objective. Life is empty for me.

3rd May, 2021 11:00 PM

I will be moving to my home village. What will happen to my work, what is going to happen about how I earn. I cannot take money from parents for a long time. Can I get a job, if yes when - this month, next month or after 6 months. What If I do not get any job?. Each day I am spending idle, I am losing earning that I would have If I had not resigned. :(

27th June, 2021 9:00 PM

I had quarrel with my brother, now I am feeling like why did I quit my job. Now, I am dependent. They are accusing me of causing some kind of problems in their lives.

I would like to stay away from home. All the time since I quit my job, I felt helpless. :(

4th July, 2021 4:00 PM

Not working for money. I have spent years doing a lot of things in the end I have only a few thousand rupees (\~15 USD) in my account.

21st July, 2021 10:00 AM

Got a phone call from a senior that there is an opportunity with a startup. I am waiting for it to happen. My mind is playing the possibility vividly. Relocation, work engagements, dress, travel.

I could not complete tasks such as my personal website, blog. I think like I need to make it a lot inspiring and contentful but I am all looking for shinier websites and doing nothing. Unable to find an objective today, could not focus on completing a mock test. impatience.

29th July, 2021 5:54 AM

I learned yesterday that my school classmate earns 6x / month. Why do I feel that people are determined than me. or other people are so determined and better compared to me.

31st July, 2021

A Linkedin post openly asks for the CTC of the last drawn salary. Don't they the value of the work the position would provide.

16th Aug, 2021

My I was not in the last job. The payment was fine and the progress would good enough in that field. But, I have taken a decision not to pursue that path. It's better to move on.

Take the present situation as a job (full-time) and see how you could build something.

8th Sep, 2021 3:00 PM

Seriously, I am doing nothing for 1.5 years! no money earned. No work done. Sleeping all the time.

9th Sep, 2021 12:41 PM

People doing Master's (Higher studies) at least they are doing something. I should have been in the last job.

6th Oct, 2021 2:00 PM

It is too difficult to get a salary of 60k and good tenure is very difficult in cities like Guntur, or AP. The local companies tend to be perverse, exploitative and direction can be limited.

21st Oct 2021 12:00 PM

Woke up after laying down on bed for around 4 hours. What am I doing, what is going to happen to my future. I couldn't do one thing right. Businesses does not look good nowadays. There is career gap.

# Engineering the future

What? another platitude. It is more of a real thing.

Engineering structures, things or paradigms build the future. Again, the future is a collection of thoughts, physical and virtual objects, unreal objects, social changes, or massive movements due to large scale technology companies.

Technology is really powerful.

# Build linux kernel

### Get a copy of source code

Take a copy of the linux kernel source repository via `git` software

```
git clone --depth=1 https://github.com/torvalds/linux
```

or download a zip file from this link - <https://github.com/torvalds/linux/archive/refs/heads/master.zip>

### Generate `.config` file

```
make menuconfig
```

#### menuconfig options

Here are the images of the some menuconfig options chosen.

# How Kubernetes pod get terminated

A stage by stage transition

#### 1 State change and preparation

The pod is set to `Terminating`. And it will be isolated from end points

#### 2 Run a preStop Hook

[preStopHook](https://kubernetes.io/docs/concepts/containers/container-lifecycle-hooks/#container-hooks) will be executed. It is special command or http request sent to containers in the pod.

#### 3 SIGTERM signal is sent to the pod

Kubernetes sends SIGTERM signal to all the containers in the pod. This lets them know that they are going to be terminated. SIGTERM can be handled, or ignored.

#### 4 Kuberntes waits for the grace period

```
apiVersion: v1
kind: pod
metadata:
  name: app-pod
spec:
  containers:
  - name: app-container
    image: busybox
  terminationGracePeriodSeconds: 60
```

#### 5 Kubernetes sends SIGKILL command

If the containers are still running it sends SIGKILL command. Kubernetes cleanup all the objects related to the terminated pod.

# Should I build a personal brand?

### Identify the purpose of my life

Build technical expertise, perform well and contribute in my field. Build emotional intelligence. Create social fabric and relevant support for this purpose.

### Social Proof

It help people to trust without the hurdle of evaluating but to base the judgement on the aspects like education, affiliations etc.

### Create content

Here you ask, what's the point?. It is too hard for the content to go viral. That is not the goal. Here is my twitter profile. People started noticing me after an year. Create simple but unique content.

![](/files/B1Uk9ihD3WM8AFqknqqp)

> The fact that you’re the one creating content, rather than simply quoting others, makes you an expert in many people’s eyes.\

> \- Dorie Clark

I keep writing inside our company the things like tips, explanatory documents, blog and videos. So, whenever someone asks me how to do something, I just say "Hey, I have written an article about, can I send it to you?".

### Network

A wide well built network expose you to ideas, validates yours, and help refine my approaches. Recognition of your work in the field by expert peers will be seen as authentic.

We should try our best to publish our work or share our ideas publicly so that people can validate the credibility.

# The better startup ideas

One best place to search for startup ideas

Do not spoil your mental peace over Uber or whatnot. The more big a company grows, the more difficult it is to get a fair service to the last person. It is hard to get, but not impossible. It is the inbuilt feature (unintentional) of any socially distributed system. The more “attention” you give to a brand either good or bad, the more powerful it grows.

Even if you are the founder of the company (take Travis Kalanick for example, there are places where he got into arguments with taxi drivers!. Arguing is not always bad.), you will still face some painful incidents at one time or another with these high scale service providers.

Be prepared that you might get a less than satisfactory service at one time or other and that you wouldn’t even be able to get support for that.

Customer services nowadays use a strategy called “Just respond with template message — you will be fine. Do not apologize. Make it difficult for the customer to vent their concerns.”

These are opportunities for you to build the next company to take away this frustration.

For example,

Netflix — when its founder “Reed Hastings” got a $40 late fine for a DVD.

Clove Dental — when its founder “Amarinder Singh” found the dental treatment conditions unhygienic. This list goes on.

# Regex in Visual Studio Code

Basic recipes for regular expression in editor

VSCode primary support for regular expressions. Find and replace menu dialog can be opened with `Ctrl + F` key combination.

![find and replace menu options](https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/1000/1*MKGNjNZcN6OpG3aH8JsAig.png)

It support plain text small, capital letters and regex.

#### New line (\n), spaces and tabs

We can search for new lines, carriage return, tabs, and spaces. Here for example, we would like to replace new line with comma (,) so that all the entries will be in csv.

![](https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/1000/1*zaFnO5wnTRz-cJNjNd1NRw.png)

The final result would look like this

#### Character set match

With help of square brackets \[ ], you can match for **one** (only one) of a set of characters.

![](https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/1000/1*9yMtD3-ecdEYfnqPxZ74PQ.png)

Here the search goes for either of 1, 2, or 3 after immediately after # symbol.

More examples,

* Important\[:!,] searches for `Important:` , `Important!` or `Important,`.
* \[AEIOUaeiou] searches for one of the letters in this set.

> Important ✨

> 9 is a character, and 99 is a number with two characters 9 and 9.

**Character ranges**

For example for a long range of numbers or alphabets, it would be cumbersome. You can represent a range with a `—` which acts as a metacharacter inside the square brackets `[]` and outside it acts as a literal character.

* Number `[0-9]` — matches number `0` to `9`.
* Alphabets `[A-Z]` — matches `A` to `Z`.
* Small letter `[a-z]` — matches `a` to `z`.

**Exclude character**

Search for words without the listed characters in the set. Here, `^` is the metacharacter for negation.

* `[^aeiou]` matches consonants
* `[^05]` matches the numbers not divisible by 5.
* `[^a-zA-Z]` matches other than alphabets.

For example,

* `medi[^a]` matches medium

![check word with out a specific literal](https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/1000/1*ki1OF5uV7BJc4UksF5WOyQ.png)

> **Note** 📝\
> \
> `] - ^ \` are not literals inside the `[ ]`. But, `. * ! , ; & $` are all the literals. This means,\
> \- `a[sk.]txt` matches `a.txt`, `astxt`, `aktxt` only.\
> \- we can escape `—` inside the brackets, as `file[0\-]` which also matches `—` literal.

# Few pieces to read before breakfast

### 1 Stay consistent&#x20;

No matter what you are doing. Coding, gardening, love, friendship, cooking, learning. Do it regularly. Keep a simple schedule and follow that.

Regardless of the kind of skill you are improving, consistency makes you better than yesterday.

### 2 Never quit your job

One of your friends making a lot of money online from a side project. It is important that their timeline may not be same as yours.

Do not quit your job. You should earn more than your monthly salary at least for 3 months to actually think about quitting. If you are planning to be on social media, minimum 50k followers are required.

### 3 Stay Humble and friendly

If any of the colleague asks for explanation about any project or the tech that you are using. Always respond with "I am glad to explain, ....., thank you".

Being a friendly is one great factor for a programmer. If you do not feel in not so good mood, try to take some rest and get back to work.

### 4 Do not make any decision when you are sad or happy

Decision to be taken with sufficient time for thinking. Tell people that you will get back with verdict in a short while.

# How to keep home for ambience

How to stay cool in summer and warm in winter?

This is one qualm, that I always come across during summer, and winter. It is maintain ambient temperature indoors during summer or winter. Although there are forced machines such as Air conditioners to cool down or heaters to warm up. It is a good idea to keep these interventions to a minimum and opt for sustainable, simple and long term measures.

## How to be cool?

Hot air stays at the top and cold air at the bottom. Exhaust fan can accelerate removing hot air from the room faster. During cooler times of the day, morning and evening keep the windows open to allow free flow of air.

### Cool your body

Drink water. Wash face with cold water a couple of times during the day. Run normal or cold water over you hand for a few minutes.

### Involve in some group activity

Group activities such as indoor games, or work takes away our attention from heat. You feel more heat and uncomfortable when you are alone.

### Switch off appliances when not in use

Your computer, oven, or any appliance if it is not in use, it is better to turn it off. First to save energy  and not to create extra heat in the room. Also, it is better to operate heat producing appliances in the cooler times of the day.&#x20;

### Plant trees and build a small garden

One sustainable and important measure is to plants with more leaves and the ones which grows faster and gives some shade. They will keep life healthy and comfortable no matter the season. A garden no matter how small can help in reducing the heat by absorbing the sunlight and keeping the surroundings at least cooler than it is without plants.

# Be original

Can we improve our originality with practice?

Let us explore the concept a bit, originality is often associated with things that are either made from scratch or made with solid input from the originator. The originator can verify their work contentedly and with certain familiarity. It does involve an amount of time and effort.

The things to which originality applies: People, thoughts, things, concepts.

### Why original

Why do we need to be original? - Looking at this question more closely, why we don't need to be unoriginal. After a sense accomplishment with the objective at hand, we tend to think more clearly of its intricacies - the process, the properties, and the incomprehensible material that is inherent but discloses itself over time and with an involved effort.

Although being unoriginal feels okay and easy for a while, going through the work for more time makes work uninteresting, creates a fear of surprise and consequent lethargy.

Do I have a choice? - If the objective for one is to simplify life, the originality is the best path forward and a good deal compared to the loss done for one's emotional wellbeing and anxiety associated.

## How to be original

Did you crosscheck something such as an answer paper, an email before sending, or a bit of intentional preparation for a presentation? - then you are being original.

Since the tasks mentioned above can be practiced so does the task of being original.

### Practice

| No. | Task                   | Practice                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 |

# Change and Contingency

Do we have the same opportunities, as others?

## Boring discussion

If we faced with a question as to whether we could build a software like Microsoft Windows, then the response would be

* now we don't need Windows right!&#x20;
* or there is demand for operating system

This line of thinking comes from an understanding that change is constant and a belief that we can't write the history, because history is something that people in the past could write. But, what we need to look into more closely is that change happens all the time (the image below).

## How to Build confidence

Start with the daily work that we are doing, see the small changes that are happening:

* Updating a wallpaper on screen
* An effort into reading more about the work we do
* Watching a movie

These small tasks provide a small changes, which helps us take the further dependent tasks.

## Do we have the opportunity

Yes. But, it is not obvious most of the time. Depending on the problem we are solving the ingredient differ and the way feels as it is not there.

We do have all contingency of the past i.e., we all have the time and place appropriate opportunities (which do not seem like they are). Once we build enough confidence and work through it, things change.

# Read and write email

The complex task of crafting a readable email

Really, do we need to learn reading emails? - Yes. Normally, people read emails for 25% of their workday. So, it make sense to learn how to read and write them in such a way as to keep the discussion concise and responsive.

### Few points to understand

1. It takes some time to read email
2. Email to be crafted with a list of expectation and responses in mind
3. Email provides some breathing space for us to think
4. Emails are not meant for instant communication

### Purpose

1. We need to thought through the information, do some work and revert back.

# Humans and software

The comparison and analogy between humans and the computer software

## Why humans are better

We (the humans) are better than we think we are, but we articulated it externally.

### Engineering the Software

Software is an articulation of the understanding of humans their problem-solving approaches. It is the contemplation of humanity.

The software is the collective human thought, logic, understanding, and endeavour. It has no conflicting objectives, which are inherent in the human brain. It manifests in the daily applications (also called app) in mobile phones, IoT devices, an app finding a date, and all things software.

Let us take an example of the app finding a date. It contains information about what society wants, legal restrictions, personal preferences, geographic preferences and the like.

### Reverse Engineering

Since most human efforts focused on automation for the last century, producing a lot of software code, including some striking advances in automobiles, rocket science, and robotics.

Now, it is our turn to contemplate our actions with the information gained from engineering all these years. And process the mined ideas from our past to filter out time-specific aggregates and to derive actionable insights into what we could do further with our lives, the earth.

# Saving money without money

some ways to save money without having todo with money

## Essential

### 1. Write down your needs

It is important for us know our consumption and lifestyle choices. Once we have list like that we will be able to know where our spending goes.

### 2. Know about maintenance

* We can repair earphones, mobile phone with out having to buy new ones
* Wash hand towels use, and keep surfaces clean
* Invest in learning about aesthetics and minimalism

#### Learn about deep cleaning

* We can deep clean our home, once every three months
* Our PC, our teeth, and our relationships are all up for deep cleaning once in a while
* Buy on a case-by-case basis items like [cable protector](https://amzn.to/3ojyNIm) to increase durability.

### 3. Cook only enough to eat

* Once we know how to estimate our food correctly, we tend to do the same with the time that we have.
* Use only the required amount of water, even though the water is generally free (less costly).

### 4. Break down work into steps

Write down anything that you are going to do more than *once.* For example,

* [x] [How to use Pomodoro](/season-4/how-to-use-pomodoro)
* [x] The list of things required for visa application etc.

So that, the pieces are in one place and we could organize and improve now.

## Advanced

### 1. Know about people

* Invest some time into knowing people
* Read books like [How to win friends and influence people](https://amzn.to/3g43RZI)
* Aware of the different levels and intensities of relationships

### 2. Master everyday things

Anything that you do regularly can be and need to be mastered.

* If you cook everyday, see how to use knife better and simplify the recipes
* If you design everyday, write down the design process and keep a daily schedule for improvement

### 3. Use colors

Know about the colors. Use color codes for each day. For example,&#x20;

* Monday - Blue
* Tuesday - Green

# Five skills for Civil Engineers

Essential skills for Civil Engineers for this decade

### 1. Ability to read literature

* This is nothing but the ability to read and digest the **college textbooks** which are accepted by the wider civil engineering community. For example, Water resources engineering by Ray K. Linsley
* Read and understand journals like [Géotechnique](https://www.icevirtuallibrary.com/toc/jgeot/current), [Cement-and-concrete-Research](https://www.journals.elsevier.com/cement-and-concrete-research)

### 2. Work with modern software

* Calculations are generally done with Spreadsheets, CAD sheets
* Not just do the calculations, we do need to know exactly the formula employed and do hand calculations to check.
* If possible master the art of computer programming

### 3. People dynamics and teach

* We need clarity in our thought and procedures, so that we could delegate the same
* There is a new skill called emotional intelligence, we can learn more about it by reading some articles such as [Harvard Business Review](https://hbr.org/topic/emotional-intelligence)
* How to teach is an important part of the day to nourish

  * [x] How to fold engineering drawings
  * [x] How to take notes
  * [x] How to decide which option to adopt
  * [x] How not to be lazy

  These are the skills we need to teach people around us without being mean.

### 4. Decisive

* The ability to take decision. Seems easy but takes few years of practice to depending on the task
* For example,
  1. How much approximation is okay
  2. Which work to prioritize
  3. Are the design calculations satisfactory
  4. Submit fast, and update fast with input from reviewers

### 5. Talk less

* Not literally talking less. It means more action.
  * [x] Carefully use the words - "Never", "Perfect", "100%", "hard work", "Wrong"
  * [x] Use these words regularly - "Thank you", "Is this design seem okay?"
  * [x] Add a factor of safety when updating a possible timeline. If the work can be completed in a week, add a safety of a day or two to account for other urgent work.
* Get preliminary info (data), and do some calculations to know what other information is required.
* Do not try to impress people. You do not need to.
* Stay to the point, always keep the final objective of the discussion in mind.
